How to set the Christmas table

Dec. 4, 2025

The Christmas table becomes the heart of the gathering. It's not just about serving dinner, but about creating a pleasant atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable. At QeChic, we know that the key is to pay attention to the details and find a balance between beauty and practicality.

Setting the table at this time of year isn't just about following protocol; you can also take the opportunity to add your personal touch and transform the dining room into a magical, elegant, and welcoming space. That's why we've put together some ideas to help you choose the right elements and arrange them, piece by piece, to achieve a professional and dazzling result.

How to set the Christmas table

Choose the Right Tablecloth

The tablecloth is the foundation of everything, the piece that dresses the table and provides the first touch of color and texture to the overall look. It matters more than it seems: if it doesn't fit, it can clash with the rest of the table setting.

You have two options:

  • Timeless Classic: Linen or cotton tablecloths in neutral tones like off-white, beige, or pearl gray. They are sophisticated and serve as a perfect canvas for the tableware and centerpieces to stand out. If you're looking for a more festive feel, opt for designs with a subtle embossed pattern or a gold trim.
  • Bold Festive: If you like to take risks, try a tablecloth in deep tones like burgundy, forest green, or midnight blue. They add drama and warmth. A practical tip: if you choose a bold color, combine it with simple tableware to avoid an overwhelming look.

Tableware and Cutlery Placement

Order matters, of course, but it also helps the table look more beautiful. To make your Christmas table look impeccable, think in layers.

  • Underplate (or presentation plate): It's essential. It's not used for eating, but as a base. You can choose one made of metal (gold or silver) or woven rattan for a more rustic style. It defines each guest's place setting.
  • Plates: On top of the underplate, place the main dinner plate and, on top of that, the soup bowl or appetizer plate. If dessert is served at the table, you can leave its plate separate. You can play with Christmas tableware if you fancy something themed, or combine white porcelain with handcrafted pieces in red, green, or metallic tones to add dynamism.
  • Cutlery: It's placed from the outside in according to the order of use. On the left, the forks. On the right, the knives (with the blade facing inwards) and the soup spoon. Dessert cutlery goes above the plate. If you can, invest in special cutlery for the occasion, with dark wood handles or a vintage matte gold finish.

Glassware in its place

A table setting isn't complete without carefully chosen Christmas glassware. Crystal always adds a sparkle that enhances the overall look.

The essential glasses are:

  • Water glass: The largest. It goes on the left, just above the knife.
  • Wine glass:To the right of the water glass.
  • Champagne glass:The far right, forming a descending line.

At QeChic, we love glasses with textured designs or soft tones like olive green or smoky amber. They add personality without needing any other embellishments.

Christmas Centerpieces

The centerpiece is usually the first thing that catches the eye. Avoid overly tall designs so that guests can see and converse comfortably.

Sometimes, simple is best:

  • Natural: A row of small vases or vintage bottles with branches of fir, eucalyptus, or holly. You can add pinecones or nuts for texture.
  • Luminous: Elegant candelabras or candle holders at varying heights (always securely placed) combined with battery-operated LED string lights.
  • Minimalist: If the table is small, a large vase with white (yellow or pink) flowers or an Advent wreath in the center is sufficient.

Lighting as the Finishing Touch

Lighting completely transforms the atmosphere of a dinner party. At Christmas, avoid bright, direct white light.

Opt for warm, multi-layered lighting:

  • Candles: Essential. Use cut crystal or metal candle holders. Tall candles in candelabras add elegance, while short ones create a cozy feel. If you're looking for safety, good-quality LED candles mimic a flame very well.
  • Ambient Lighting: The overhead light should be soft. If you have a lamp on the table, try to make sure it's dimmable and very warm.

The goal is to create a flattering ambiance and make the tableware and glassware shine even more.

Choose decorations according to style

Ideally, all the decorations should follow the same theme. It's best to choose Christmas table decorations that match your style, so you can use them year after year.

For inspiration, here are some trendy styles you can adapt to your own Christmas table decorations:

  • Nordic style: White or light wood bases. Combine tableware in earth tones, wool or raw linen textiles, and natural elements such as dried branches, moss, and soft lighting.
  • Updated classic style: White linen or embroidered tablecloths. Gold or silver chargers, cut crystal glasses, and cloth napkins with elegant rings. Centerpieces should be symmetrical, with tall candles and touches of dark red or bottle green.
  • Metallic glam style: Dark background (black or midnight blue tablecloth). Black or matte gray tableware and plenty of accent lighting with gold or copper details on cutlery, chargers, and candlesticks. Touches of velvet or large bows on the chairs complete this style.

Christmas invites us to create a warm and beautiful atmosphere. At QeChic, we help you achieve the ambiance you envision.
